About: my client is a leading publishing firm & they are looking for a Oracle / SQL / Pro Cobol Consultant.

They are currently undertaking a migration project for a prestigious client, involving the transition from an outdated OpenVMS environment to OpenVMS on X86, with the database re-hosted on Linux. As part of our dynamic team, my client is seeking an experienced Oracle / SQL / Pro Cobol Consultant to contribute to the success of this project.

Responsibilities: As an Oracle / SQL / Pro Cobol Consultant, you will play a key role in updating and optimizing code, ensuring a smooth transition to the new environment. Your responsibilities include:

• Updating Pro Cobol / SQL / DCL code to support connecting to databases on a remote machine.
• Implementing code changes necessary to support the application running on OpenVMS X86 using a new Cobol precompiler.
• Adapting code to support the migration from the rulebased to cost-based optimizer.
• Collaborating closely with our VMS architecture and quality assurance teams to ensure data security, privacy, and solution integrity.
• Achieving relevant accreditations and certifications.

Requirements: To be successful in this role, you should:

• Possess a strong understanding of Oracle 10gR2 on OpenVMS.
• Demonstrate proficiency in working with embedded SQL in Pro COBOL code.
• Have hands on experience with applications written in SQL / Pro COBOL.
• Be experienced in working within an OpenVMS development environment.
• Understand DCL (Digital Command Language).
• Demonstrate a good understanding of Service Operations & ITIL responsibilities in both agile and nonagile environments.
• Be diligent, positive, and committed to supporting fellow Engineers and improving the platform continuously.
• Have excellent communication skills (written and verbal) to articulate complex solutions to senior management and IT professionals.
• Manage a complex mix of work within tight timescales.
• Exhibit a positive attitude and a strong commitment to delivering quality work.
• Engage effectively with all stakeholders in a complex service delivery model.

Additional Information:

• This is a remote position.
• The pay rate is £320 £340 per day PAYE, depending on experience.
