We’re building Global Player, an audio and video service that combines Radio, podcasts and other content, which is used by millions of people all for free on iOS, Android, smart speakers, TV and in-car.

You’ll be leading our Android platform team, responsible for the growth of our Android developers and codebase.

Measures of success – In the first few months, you would have:

• Have identified the first improvements you’d like to make to the codebase.
• Have established a core cross-team collaboration to make sure our Android developers aren’t siloed from each other.
• Have worked with other leads to ensure that our Android Global Player is consistent with other platforms.
• Mentored and paired with Android developers working on complex features in the code base.

Responsibilities of the role

• Mentoring other Android developers to help them reach the next stage of their career.
• Coordinating collaboration amongst the Android platform team (our developers work in vertical feature teams day-to-day).
• Improving our codebase, working on the patterns and architecture used within the app.
• Choosing which new technologies to adopt for both business value and developer happiness.
• Collaboration with other lead developers to ensure domain and functional consistency across the Global Player eco-system.

What you will need

The ideal candidate will be proactive and willing to develop and implement innovative solutions, capable of the following:

• A multi-skilled developer who is happy to step out of their comfort zone and learn new technologies.
• Strong understanding of both Kotlin and Java (Our codebase is mostly Kotlin, but some Java remains).
• Extensive knowledge of Reactive Programming (we use RxJava/Kotlin throughout the app).
• An excitement for teaching others what you know.

And any of these would be a bonus:

• Experience with Jetpack Compose.
• Experience with Exoplayer for both audio and video.
• Experience maintaining a CI/CD stack for Android.
